It’s the only time I’ve really wished for a rental car in Scotland.

While staying in Inverness, I took a long day trip to the Isle of Skye with WOW Scotland tours. The 12-hour tour was excellent and covered a lot of ground. But not nearly enough for me! If I ever return to Scotland, I know for sure that I’ll want to spend a few nights on Skye and rent a car to do some proper exploring. The island is just too big, and too beautiful, to “do” in a day.

Some highlights from my WOW tour:

A brief visit to Portree, Skye’s largest town and home to this colorful collection of harbour houses …

The breathtaking Kilt Rock and waterfall, stunning Sligachan Bridge, and the giant rock formation known as the Old Man of Storr …

The Quiraing landslip …

And the magical Faerie Glen with its mysterious mounds — my favorite place on the island …

And here’s my favorite grocery store find. Fancy popcorn. For the snacker who has everything!

Another favorite thing: Quite often, our driver had to maneuver the bus to avoid sheep lounging on the side of the road or trying to cross. But what really stopped traffic was this small herd of renegade cows. No amount of effort from the (frustrated) farmer could get them mo(ooooo)ving in the right direction.

Here they are, a few minutes later, still going rogue! For anonymity purposes, I’ve concealed their identities …

With his nose ring, I’m assuming that one of those amblers is a bull. Who can blame him for wanting to go for a weekend stroll with his lady friends? 🙂

Here are the rest of my photos from the Isle of Skye and surrounding area:
