There are three Aran Islands in Ireland, and Inishmore is the largest and biggest tourist draw. Getting to Inishmore from Galway involves taking a shuttle bus, followed by a ferry. The process takes about 1.5 hours from soup to nuts.

While the island isn’t huge, getting around is more efficient if you either book a horse/buggy tour, book a van tour, or rent a bicycle. I chose the bike option, and it was FANTASTIC. I’m so glad I decided to DIY my Inishmore day trip vs. taking an organized tour. Shortly after arriving, the sun came out, and it ended up being a gorgeous day. I loved being able to explore at my own pace and go wherever I pleased.

The big attraction on Inishmore is Dún Aengus — a prehistoric fort built on the edge of a huge cliff. STUNNING!

Biking along the coast, I ended up stopping every few minutes because I kept coming across things that were incredibly beautiful. The island also had a mystical quality that I’ve found so pervasive throughout Ireland, particularly on the western side. Of course, that could just be my mind getting caught up in all the local folklore that I find so fascinating.

But I will say this … when I stopped on one stretch of road to take a photo, I couldn’t shake the distinct feeling that I was being watched.

Turns out, I was.

I turned around, and these folks were staring right at me. 🙂
