If you have time to do just one thing while visiting Kyoto, the Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine is a must. With more than 10,000 blazing red torii gates leading up to the top of Inari mountain, it’s a breathtaking way to spend a half or whole day.
I went on a Sunday morning which, during warmer months, would be an extremely busy time. But, as I’m finding with many sights in the Kyoto area, these sunny and brisk winter days make for less crowded visits to the usual hot spots.
I didn’t make the 2-hour walk all the way to the tip top of Inari, but I made it as far as the observation deck, which afforded a wonderful view of Kyoto.
